Fire shoots above the 6-foot fence at Zore’s Towing in Lebanon as junk vehicles and scrap burn Wednesday night.

A spark from a scrap car is being blamed for an intense fire along Interstate 65 in Lebanon Wednesday night.

The Lebanon Fire Department had water on the flames in fewer than 10 minutes, but it took excavators and spray foam to defeat the fire in about two and a half hours, LFD Lt. Jason Adams reported.

The fire started in a heap of cars and scrap workers had stacked before closing for the evening. Zore’s officials told firefighters that a spark from an electrical ignition likely ignited the flames at about 8:45 p.m., Adams reported, adding that foul play is not suspected as a factor.

Zore’s is at 2115 Frontage Road, west of the confluence of U.S. 52 South and I-65 South.

No buildings were reported damaged and no people were reported injured, but it took several fire departments to conquer the fire. They first sprayed water. Because of the fire’s size and lack of water nearby, LFD asked for a tanker shuttle, in which tanker trucks from numerous departments may relay water from the nearest hydrants to the fire.

When firefighters got the fire under control enough for safety, excavators separated vehicle piles so assisting departments with special apparatus could spray foam onto the remaining burning vehicles, Adams reported. The Indianapolis International Airport Fire Department even sent an aerial foam truck.

No monetary damage estimate had been determined by Thursday, Adams said.

Area fire departments work in tandem on small and large fires. The Whitestown Fire Department answered calls for service in Lebanon while the Lebanon crews were tied up at Zore’s on the city’s northwest side.

Boone County Emergency Management and the Boone County Health Department monitored the situation for possible hazards in water runoff.

Other assisting agencies included Center Township, Thorntown Sugar Creek, Advance, NS Zionsville fire departments; Boone County Emergency Medical Services, and Zore’s Towing.
