Street sweeper driver dies in West Des Moines Highway 5 crash

A driver of a street sweeper truck was killed in a crash Monday night at the intersection of Highway 5 and Interstate 35 in West Des Moines, West Des Moines Police Department officials said.

Kyle Stewart, 25, of Des Moines, was traveling northbound on Highway 5 at 6:51 p.m. when his vehicle rolled off the road near the intersection with Interstate 35, Sgt. Jason Heintz, a West Des Moines Police Department spokesperson, said. 

The 2018 white Isuzu sweeper semi-truck belonged to Parking Lot Specialties, a parking lot contractor based in Carlisle, according to Heintz. 

West Des Moines Fire Department got to the scene and attempted life-saving measures on Stewart who died at the scene, Heintz said. 

Officers closed one lane of Highway 5 while they conducted the investigation. The lane was reopened at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Heintz said. 

The police department’s traffic unit was investigating the cause of the crash Tuesday, Heintz said.
