Ottawa firefighters used heavy rescue equipment to remove a woman from a rolled-over vehicle early Wednesday.

Just before 2 a.m., Ottawa police notified the fire service of a vehicle in a ditch on Moodie Drive, near the intersection with Barnsdale Road. Firefighters arrived on the scene several minutes later, carrying heavy rescue equipment, including heavy-duty cutters known as the “jaws of life.”

The vehicle was on its side and a woman was trapped inside. “Crews on scene worked diligently to stabilize the vehicle while tending to the occupant,” an Ottawa Fire Services media release said.

Firefighters removed the roof from the vehicle, used jacks to lift it and extricated the woman inside.

Paramedics were called at about 1:55 a.m. and found a female in her 20s with multiple non-life-threatening injuries.

After firefighters rescued her from the vehicle, paramedics transported her to a hospital trauma centre in serious, but stable condition.

It was the second rescue in less than 12 hours.

Firefighters had also responded to a call for assistance just after 5 p.m. Tuesday following a collision at the intersection of Snake Island Road and Blanchfield Road, near Osgoode.

Firefighters stabilized that vehicle and freed the trapped driver using specialized hydraulic equipment. The driver was freed in seven minutes.

A spokesman for the Ottawa Paramedic Service said two people were treated: one in their 90s and another in their 20s. Both were taken to The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening.
