JENISON, MI -- A man was wounded after police fired upon him at two different locations during an incident that ended with a chaotic police pursuit of a stolen U-Haul truck that had rammed several cruisers.

Police said the man was last known to be in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital.

Two police officers also had minor injuries from the crashes.

The shooting incidents involved Walker police at an address in the 900 block of Cedar Run Court, then later during a pursuit of the U-Haul truck in the area of Coral Street and Terrace Lane.

Walker police said they were at an address Friday, Sept. 9 about 1:20 p.m. in the 900 block of Cedar Run Court on an investigation of a stolen motorcycle,

Police confronted a person there, resulting in a “small struggle” and then shots fired by a Walker police detective, Walker Police Chief Keith Mankel said.

The person then fled in a vehicle and abandoned that vehicle in the area of Wilson Avenue and Butterworth Street. He fled on foot.

Police said the man went into the Grand River and police continued to search for him. Police later determined he swam across the river.

Ottawa County sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks said police found the person shortly after he allegedly stole a U-Haul being packed up, apparently for a move.

During the pursuit, “he struck numerous police cruisers, he struck numerous civilian vehicles and was driving extremely recklessly,” Sparks said.

In the area of Terrace Lane, south of Baldwin Street, the driver rammed several Ottawa County sheriff’s cruisers. It was then that a deputy fired at the truck.

The U-Haul truck crashed a short time later in the area of Coral Street and Glendora Avenue and the driver was taken into custody.

Sparks said the pursuit was chaotic.

“He led deputies on an extensive chase throughout the neighborhood,” Sparks said. “He was driving through yards, items were spilling out the back of the U-Haul. He was ramming deputies. He rammed several vehicles and road signs on Baldwin Street before he was eventually taken into custody.”

State police are investigating the shots fired by the Ottawa County sheriff’s deputy. It wasn’t immediately clear if state police also would be investigating the shots fired by the Walker police detective.

Mankel said Walker officers wear body cameras and the investigation would involve reviewing that footage.
