Two Salisbury, Connecticut, men were arrested on Thursday afternoon after they reportedly attempted to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle near Eastern Avenue, according to the Springfield Police Department.

On Thursday at 4:45 p.m., Stephen Baker, 32, and Timothy McDonald, 33, both from Simsbury, Conn., were arrested and both charged with attempted larceny under $1200, attempt to commit a crime, possession of burglarious tools and attempt to commit malicious damage to a motor vehicle, according to the department.

Prior to the two Connecticut men’s arrest, Springfield firefighters stationed on Eastern Avenue reportedly observed the two individuals underneath a vehicle, the police department said. Authorities believe they were attempting to steal a catalytic converter.

Once Firefighters came outside the suspects immediately fled the scene, leaving their own car behind, according to the department.

The Springfield Police Department stated that responding officers positively identified the two suspects, located them on Wilbraham Road and placed them under arrest.

Authorities also found a GPS tracking device, a cutting tool, screwdriver, knife, power drill and impact gun.

The alleged attempted catalytic convertor theft follows a weekend of “unusual” car break-ins at Springfield’s Liberty Heights neighborhood, where 20 cars were broken into by having the windows smashed in. Police said valuable items were stolen from the vehicles.
